Gus F. Schlueter

After 89 years of rich, rewarding life, Gus Schlueter flew off to farm with the Lord on Thursday, March 27, 2014. He died at the home of his daughter, Sue Beckner, in Tekamah.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer. The Reverend Thomas Clark will officiate.
Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer, with military honors conducted by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Monday at the church in Palmer.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Gus was born to Gus and Sophia (Peters) Schlueter on December 14, 1924, on the family farm near Palmer. The youngest of six siblings, Gus grew up laughing hard and working harder.
He was as comfortable with a welder as he was with a waltz, and rarely missed a farm auction or wedding dance.
Gus was baptized and confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer. He attended grade school in District 14, graduated from Palmer High School in 1944, and farmed on the family farm.
He served in the Army in WWII, including Germany in the occupational regiment. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer, and Post 119 in St. Paul, where he served for years as Post Commander, and Color Guard member.
The man was a metal-working genius, inventing tools to plant watermelon seeds and take out weeds. He built irrigation pipe trailers, bail movers, earth planers, a complete garden tractor, and a cattle feeding system that ran on rails, which he called "the caboose." Gus also built a hair-raising 15-foot slide for his grandkids, and a perfectly balanced merry-go-round. His farm place will forever ring with the sound of children's laughter.
Gus was a family man, marrying his lovely Jean (Rutten) on January 6, 1950 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer.
As newlyweds Gus and Jean rented a farm near Palmer, and later bought an acreage where they farmed and raised seven children. The family also raised cattle, and tended acres of watermelons and vegetables. Schlueter's Melon Stand was a local standard in St. Paul for many years.
Gus is survived by his wife, Jean; his children and their spouses, Jim Schlueter, Gary and Sue (Schlueter) Beckner, Ed and Carol (Schlueter) Stepanek, Tim and Jane (Schlueter) Boehle, Joe Schlueter, and Sam and Tam (Pruitt) Schlueter. Twelve grandchildren include Randy Beckner, Bonny (Beckner) Markgraf, Jason Stepanek, Sarah (Boehle) Pool, Michael Boehle, Brett Schlueter, Tarah Schlueter, Gregg Schlueter, Morgan Schlueter, Tyler Schlueter, Mason Schlueter, Tess Schlueter, and their families. He was also blessed with 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law Helen and Dale Wegner, sisters-in-law Betty Schlueter and Helen Schlueter, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his son, Fred; grandson, Bill Stepanek; brothers, John, Pete, and Otto; a sister, Marie; and his parents.
Gus will be both terribly missed and fondly remembered for his easy laugh, ample orneriness, and creative mind. The man loved his family and his farm, big band music, pheasant hunting, a lively game of cards, long walks with his dogs, and a good meal with cherry pie.
