Gloria A. Novotny, 75, of Elba died Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Martha Voigt will officiate. Interment will be held in the Elba Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Gloria was born February 26, 1937 to Daniel and Blanche (Spilinek) Svoboda at Elba, Nebraska.
She attended school in Elba and graduated from Elba High School.
Gloria was united in marriage to Alfred Novotny on June 4, 1955 in Elba.
She lived all of her life near Elba. After raising her three children, she worked at Elba Public School as a cook. She later worked at Zyntek's Market in Elba. In 1992, she cooked at the Howard County Hospital until her retirement in December 2009.
Gloria and Alfred were lifetime members of the Elba United Methodist Church. She was a very active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #119 of St. Paul for over 40 years, where she served as President. She stayed active in the club during the Poppy drives for the Auxiliary. Gloria served office at the District level. She also served as a mom for the Girls State Convention in Lincoln for many years and attended many National and State Conventions. She enjoyed helping at the Veterans Home and the hospital with their many activities. Gloria served as secretary for the Elba Cemetery for many years.
She was passionate for cooking and baking, knitting, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Gloria enjoyed cooking for company especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
For many years she was a caregiver and for her last few months of her life she allowed caregivers to take care of her, which made those months of her life simpler and happier.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell and Anna Novotny of Grand Island and Donald and Kathy Novotny of Fort Collins, CO; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and LaVern Obermeier of Lincoln; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers & sisters-in-law, Dan and Helen Svoboda of St. Paul and Arden & Ethel Svoboda of Grand Island and one sister-in-law, Rose Lee Novotny of St. Paul.
Gloria is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alfred on May 30, 2012 and one brother Harold Svoboda.
