Gary R. Christensen, 75, of Dannebrog died Sunday, October 17, 2010 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday at St. Peder's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Nysted. The Reverend Don Voorhees will officiate. Interment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the Gary Christensen Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Gary was born June 14, 1935 to Sigurd W. & Georgia M. (Hansen) Christensen at Grand Island, Nebraska.
He was raised on the family farm. He attended country school District #47 and graduated from Dannebrog High School in 1952.
Gary was united in marriage to Nancy Selden on March 10, 1957 at Nysted, Nebraska.
Gary farmed, raised cattle and also did custom hay grinding and silage harvesting. He delivered seed corn for Cargill and also worked in land leveling in the 1960's.
He was a member of the St. Peder's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Nysted and served on the church council. He also served as president of the Howard County Crime Stoppers, was a member of the Farmer's Union and was a 4-H leader.
Gary served on the Centura School Board for 24 years. He was a member of the State School Board serving as President and also serving on conferences and working with the Legislature on school issues. Gary served on the National School Board, attending several conventions and leadership conferences.
Gary enjoyed bowling for 30 years and bowled in the National Tournament for 30 years, receiving a plaque for that accomplishment. He was softball pitcher for Farwell and umpired for Boelus baseball games and for softball.
He is survived by his wife Nancy of Dannebrog; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Carmen Christensen of Grand Island and Bruce and Lois Christensen of Dannebrog; one daughter & son-in-law, Melissa & Karl Janulewicz of Redding, CA; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents and Hesston Lend.
