Eugene Hurt, 56, of Boelus died May 9, 2008 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, NE.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday at the First Baptist Church Family Center in Dannebrog. The Reverend Barry Arndt will officiate. Interment will be in the Czechoslovakian Cemetery in Farwell. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 4 - 8 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Hurt was born July 7, 1951 in St. Paul to Richard J. and Genevieve (Sidel) Hurt.
Eugene was raised and attended school in Boelus through the 10th grade. He then attended Centura High School where he graduated in 1969. Starting at age 14, he worked for Lyle Nelson.
He was united in marriage to Brenda Vaughn on July 14, 1971 in St. Paul. The couple lived in the Dannebrog area. Beginning in 1972, Eugene worked for Fennett Swanson. He worked for him for 13 years. He also owned and operated a custom hay business. Eugene worked for Jim and Mike Nelson for 7 years and continued working in his hay business.
The couple moved to the home farm near Boelus. In 2000, he began working for the Nebraska Department of Roads. At the time of his death he was a senior maintenance worker for the department of roads. He also continued the operation of his hay business.
Eugene enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and airboating. He had a special love for his family and grandchildren.
He was a volunteer EMT for 10 years and was on the Boelus Fire Department for 13 years.
Eugene was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dannebrog.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda of Boelus; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Travis Hurt of Phoenix, Trent Hurt of Omaha, and Troy and Trisha Hurt of Malvern, Iowa; one daughter, Kimberly Hurt of Phoenix; three grandchildren, Charlie, Jessie and Logan; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Ray and Bev Hurt of Dannebrog and Jerald Hurt of Boelus; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Darlene Dodd of Boelus and Delores and Harlan Stutzman of Colorado Springs, CO, and Patrick Bruning who Eugene treated as a son, and Patrick's wife Alicia.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Mary Ann.
