Ethel M. Madsen

Ethel Madsen, 97, of St. Paul died Saturday, August 13, 2011 at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday at Faith Lutheran - St. Peder's Church at Nysted, Nebraska. The Reverend Donald Voorhees will officiate. Interment will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the Faith Lutheran - St. Peder's Church at Nysted.

Ethel was born July 28, 1914 to James & Kate (Jess) Baxter on a farm near Farwell, Nebraska.

She was baptized as a baby in the Presbyterian Faith.
She attended school at Farwell and graduated from Farwell High School.

Ethel always wanted to be a teacher. Her first teaching experience was at District 52, where she taught for 6 years.

Ethel was united in marriage to Frode P. Madsen on June 16, 1937 at Farwell, Nebraska.
After their marriage she was confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and became a member of St. Peder's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Nysted.
The couple farmed in the Dannebrog and Nysted area. They later purchased the farm and continued living there even after Frode retired. She continued her teaching career where she taught the upper room students at Nysted for two years. She continued to take classes at Kearney State and get her teaching degree then taught in the Centura Elementary School. Later, being qualified she became the Elementary and High School Librarian for 9 years. She retired in 1979 due to her husband failing health.

Ethel later moved into St. Paul to Parkside Plaza, Matelyn Retirement Community and Heritage Living Center.

Ethel was devoted to her family and always happy to see them. She crocheted Afghans for her family and did fancywork. She was a homemaker and was known for her baking. She enjoyed reading, and playing Bridge, Pitch and Pinochle. She and Frode enjoyed dancing and square dancing. Ethel lived an active life.

She is survived by three sons & daughters-in-law, Robert & Theresa Madsen of Wheatland, WY, Gary Madsen of Grand Island, NE and Kenneth & Peggy Madsen of Wilmington, NC; six grandchildren, Alan & Stephani Madsen of Wheatland, WY, Aaron Madsen of Wheatland, WY, Brent & Monica Madsen of Hebron, NE, Brandee & K.C. Welty of Grand Island, Kevin Madsen Wilmington, NC and Jason & Jenny Madsen of Columbia, MD and nine great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frode on June 30, 1995, two sisters, Elsie Baliman and Hilda Horky and a twin sister Bessie Baxter.
