Emma I. Christensen

Emma I. Hirschman Christensen, 93, of St. Paul died Saturday, December 8, 2007 at Heritage Nursing Home in St. Paul.

Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 4 - 8 p.m. with a wake service at 6:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

She was born April 12, 1914 in Farwell to James and Anna (Jelinek) Safarik. She lived on a farm in the Farwell area with her parents where she attended Farwell Public School. She then attended St. Paul High School where she graduated in 1932.
She then worked as a waitress in Central City.

Emma was united in marriage to Don Hirschman on October 20, 1936 in St. Paul. To this union were born three sons, James, Robert who died in infancy, and Jerald. Emma and Don lived in the Gage Valley area on a farm. She worked along side him when they started their registered Hereford herd in 1948. She was a very hard worker. Emma enjoyed dancing, baking, loved crafts and sewing. Emma was later employed at Lumbard-Leschinsky Studio in Grand Island, The Phonograph in St. Paul and as a waitress at both Ron's Supper Club and the American Legion Club in St. Paul.

Don died on April 3, 1973 and Emma moved into St. Paul in 1975.
Emma was united in marriage to Sigurd Christensen on April 16, 1977 in St. Paul. Sigurd died on November 1, 1996. Emma moved into Matelyn Retirement Center in 2002 and to Heritage Living Center in January 2007.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul, where she was a member of the Altar Society. She was also a member of St. Libory Catholic Church Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of Grand Island, the Hill Trailers Extension and the Carl Mogensen American Legion Auxiliary Unit #119 of St. Paul.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Virginia Hirschman of St. Paul and Jerald and Patti Hirschman of Grand Island; one step-son and step daughter-in-law, Gary and Nancy Christensen of Dannebrog; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and numerous step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Don Hirschman and Sigurd Christensen; an infant son, Robert; two brothers, John and Wilfred Safarik and a sister, Hilda Spilinek.
