Ella M. Swanson

Ella M. Swanson, 88, of St. Paul died Thursday, February 13, 2014 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island with her family by her side.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul with Vicar Marcia Dorn officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Wolbach.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mrs. Swanson was born June 19, 1925 in Wolbach to Charles and Christina (Yuranek) Merta. She was baptized in Trinity Lutheran Church in Wolbach.

She was raised on a farm east of Wolbach. She attended country school near Wolbach where she graduated in 1943. After graduation, Ella taught school for two years at Rock Creek School and for one year in a school south of St. Paul

Ella was united in marriage to Kenneth H. Swanson on February 28, 1946 in Grand Island.

The couple lived on a farm northeast of Wolbach West Ridge. They moved 7 miles north of St. Paul in 1963. Ella worked as a cook for a number of years for Louie Jares, MacLain's, Nowak's, Nelson's and Nesiba's. She quit cooking and started raising violets in 1984. She attended craft shows until she lost her husband in 1989.

She started to do some cooking again 1991. She started cooking for the St. Paul Community Center 1992 and also did cleaning for Farmer's Union and the Red Carpet. She retired from the community center in December of 1997.

Ella moved into the Parkside Annex in August 2009. She lived there until October 11, 2013 when she moved to Lakeview Nursing Home in Grand Island.

Ella loved to quilt, bake cookies, make candy and she used to raise large gardens and fill her freezer with the produce she raised. She also liked to do search word puzzles and go for drives. When able, she would go for walks and play cards.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Fisher of St. Paul and Kay Butler of Alda; a son, David Swanson of St. Paul; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Ella is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth on February 20, 1989; and a step brother, Cyril Havlik.
