Elaine J. Ross, 80, of Grand Island died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Elaine's wishes were to be cremated.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Jay Vetter will officiate. Inurnment will be held in Elba Cemetery.
Elaine Jean Ross was born on April 24, 1931 on the family farm at Elba, Nebraska to Richard and Hilda (Safarik) Spilinek.
She grew up and received her education at Elba. Although she left school early, she returned and received her diploma from Elba High School in 1959. She later worked at Jack & Jill Grocery in Grand Island, Nebraska while attending the Grand Island Business School.
In 1965, she began employment with Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Company in Hastings, Nebraska. With Kansas Nebraska she traveled to Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado and various places in Nebraska giving presentations to area schools and organizations on gas appliances and safety procedures. In addition, she trained the company sales staff regarding gas appliances and various services offered by the company.
She retired in January 31, 1992 saying she had the perfect job for her. In addition to her services with Kansas Nebraska Gas Company, she also worked part time at Riverside Country Club and at Paul's Supper Club while her children attended college.
She attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island and was a member of the International Czechoslovakia Genealogical Society, the Southeastern Czech Society of Hastings, the Nebraska Blue Flame Association and the National Natural Gas Association.
In her retirement years, she enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed genealogy research, embroidery, cross stitching, traveling, reading and cats. She always had a cat for a pet.
Elaine is survived by a daughter, Melanie Decker of Waco, TX; a son & daughter-in-law, Mark & Mary Ross of Ord, NE; five grandchildren, Monica & Erich Helfer of Overland Park, KS, Patrick & Sunday Ross of O'Neill, NE, Kyle Ross of Ord, NE, William & Jennifer Decker of Elm Mott, TX and Laura Decker of Las Vegas, NV; five great grandchildren, Leah and Audrey Helfer, Ella Decker, Spencer Ross and Jacob Hoppes; one brother and sister-in-law, Roland & Julianne Spilinek of Elba, NE.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Elaine would like to thank special relatives who helped with her caregiving: Gordon Svoboda, Sr., Betty & Gilbert Spilger and Tony & Ann Curtis.
