Edward LaVerne Paulsen, 85, of St. Paul died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Thomas Clark will officiate. Inurnment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul with military honors at graveside by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.
A time to visit with the family will be held on Friday, January 13, 2012 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Christ Lutheran Church, St. Paul Area Library Foundation or to the Howard County Medical Center Foundation.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Paulsen was born February 23, 1926 in Lincoln, NE to Ed and Beatrice (Lindell) Paulsen.
He attended schools in St. Paul and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1944.
LaVerne entered the U.S. Navy on October 28, 1944. He served in the Navy Mail Service. He received his discharge on July 6, 1946. He then served in the Navy reserves for over 6 ½ years earning his discharge on May 13, 1952.
He was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Holtorf on October 28, 1951 at Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul. To this union a daughter, Beverly was born.
LaVerne worked in his father's welding shop in St. Paul and at the St. Paul Post Office. He transferred to the Railway Mail Service in Omaha and worked on the Omaha and Denver Line of the Burlington Railroad. He returned to the St. Paul Post Office where he worked for 41 years retiring in 1987.
He was an accomplished welder, helping to build the Grover Cleveland Alexander baseball field in St. Paul.
The couple loved to travel and cherished many friendships. He especially enjoyed being with his wife and family. They worked for two summers in Yellowstone National Park and for one summer in the Teton National Park. He was an avid Nebraska football fan holding season tickets since 1947.
He will be remembered for his ready smile, quick wit and ever present sense of humor.
LaVerne was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul, the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul, was an active member of the Lions Club, a past member of the Platt-Duetsche, and a member of the Nebraska Rural Letter Carriers Association. When he was younger, LaVerne held a commercial pilots license.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia of St. Paul; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Harry Brown of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Andrew and Sarah; one sister, Betty Jacobsen of Casa Grande, AZ and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
