Dorothy Mae Ambroz, 87, of Grand Island, died Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Chaplin Colleen O'Neill will officiate. Interment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
She was born November 30, 1922 near Palmer to William Henry and Clara Ellen (Samuelson) Starkey.
Dorothy lived near Palmer, Wolbach, and Farwell before moving to St. Paul. She attended St. Paul schools, graduating from St. Paul High School in 1941. After her graduation, she did babysitting and worked at Knothe Café©.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Paul Ambroz on March 7, 1943 in Gainesville, TX.
The couple lived in St. Paul, operating the Champlin Truck Stop where Dorothy did the bookkeeping. In 1971, they moved to Lake Tahoe and then to Grand Island in 1974 where she did the bookkeeping for Ambroz Furniture. Dorothy was also a waitress at the Riverside Country Club for a number of years. In 1984, they moved to Central City where they ran Central Furniture until 1989.
Dorothy enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing rummy, cooking, is famous for her cinnamon pickles and loved dancing with Paul at the American Legion dances in St. Paul.
Dorothy is survived by two sons, Jack and Jerry Ambroz, both of Grand Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and David Varley of Central City; three grandsons and their wives, Travis & Kim O'Gorman, Trevor and Samantha Varley and Trenton and Renea Varley; three great-grandsons, Tanner, Easton and Braiden Varley; and a great-granddaughter, Taryn Varley; and two sisters, Eileen Rowe of St. Paul and Bernice Grammer of Vernal, Utah.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul on August 16, 2002; one grandson, Tristan Varley; one brother, Lavern Starkey and three sisters, Leila Hansen, Lucille Graus and Betty Smith.
