Donald L. Smith

August 16, 1925 — December 24, 2015

Donald L. Smith, 90, of Dannebrog died, Thursday, December 24, 2015 at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 26, 2016 at the First Baptist Church Family Center in Dannebrog.  Reverend Pat Moore will officiate.  Inurnment will be in Oakridge Cemetery in Dannebrog.  Military honors will be provided by Mickelsen Larkowski American Legion Post #241 of Dannebrog.

Memorials are suggest to the First Baptist church or Gideons International.

Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smith was born August 16, 1925 in Grand Island to Fernando and Zella (Richardson) Smith.

He was raised and attended school in Hall County.

Don was united in marriage to Marie Hahs on July 24, 1944 in St. Paul.

Approximately one month later on August 30, 1944 Don enlisted in the United States Army to serve in World War II.  He served in the Rhineland and Central Europe.  He received his discharge on June 6, 1946.

Don returned to farm with his father in Howard County.  Through the years Don also worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island.

The couple lived for all of their married life in Howard County, mostly in Dannebrog.

Don worked for the Dannebrog Public School and Petersen Lumber.  Don started his own painting and decorating business and he enjoyed his work and his customers.

Don was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dannebrog and the Dannebrog Booster Club in which he was active.  He was also a member of the Mickelsen Larkowski American Legion Post #241 of Dannebrog and he enjoyed being a member of the Gideon International, Grand Island Camp.

Don enjoyed woodworking, fishing and taking trips to Branson.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Vicki Smith of Saginaw, MN; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Tom Roberts of Rochester, MN and Amy and Ken Friesen of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Shirley Ryberg of Kenyon, MN and Arlene Kemplin of Gresham, OR and Karen and Wally Verrette of Cottonwood, AZ; and one brother, Gale Smith of Dannebrog.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marie who went home to be the Lord on March 8, 2012; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Wayne Smith and Dale and Janice Smith; an infant brother; two brothers-in-law, Vernon Ryberg and Lee Kemplin; a sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Donn Muhleman; a sister-in-law, Dancie Smith; and a daughter-in-law, Susan Smith.
