Ira Dean Mattley, 86, of St. Paul died Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Brookefield Park in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 21, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Kati Salmons will officiate.
Interment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul with military honors at graveside by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul EMT's and/or to the St. Paul Fire Department.
Ira Dean was born June 25, 1927 to Ira W. and Flossie (Maxson) Mattley on a farm in Loup County, Nebraska.
In 1938, the family moved to a farm three miles west of Burwell. Dean grew to manhood with four brothers, Dale, Duane, Darrell and Dee. Dean attended grade school in District 25 Rosehill and District 1 Riverside in Garfield County. He graduated from Burwell High School in 1944.
Dean enjoyed his growing up years on the farm, hunting wild game and fishing with his father and brothers. He continued his hobby throughout his life. They spent many hours on Sherman Lake and Calamus Lake fishing.
He was united in marriage to Evelyn Winfrey on July 11, 1947 in Central City, Nebraska.
The couple had one of the first radio and tv shops in St. Paul. In their later years they harvested honey in Howard and Garfield Counties in an apiary at their home.
Dean enjoyed gardening, making wine from grapes, reading and using their computer.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of St. Paul. Dean was instrumental in establishing the EMT program in St. Paul and was an EMT and fireman of St. Paul Fire Department for 40 years.
Dean is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn of St. Paul; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale & Erlyn of Downs, Kansas and Dr. Dee & Linda of Harlan, IN; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Mattley of Burwell and Melvina Mattley of Kearney; twelve nieces and nephews, Renetta Hookstra, Rachel Dye, Dr. Rhonda Mattley, Renee Johnson, Phyllis Janitscheck, La Ree Olson, Judy Derr, Barbara Mattley, Cindy Fuqua, Mark, Ryan & Randy Mattley; twenty-four great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Sherman & Dorthea (Miller) Winfrey, two brothers Duane and Darrel, nephew, David Mattley and a niece Cheryl Bleach.
