Dean D. Heiser, 87, of Scotia died Thursday, November 21, 2013 at his home.
Graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday in Mount Hope Cemetery in Scotia. Reverend Martha Voigt will officiate.
Military honors at graveside will be presented by the Rueben Beck American Legion Post #150 of Scotia.
Memorials are suggested to the Scotia United Methodist Church.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Heiser was born May 19, 1926 in Osborne, KS to Wesley and Elizabeth (Hofer) Heiser.
Dean was raised in Osborne and attended Osborne High School where he graduated in 1943.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Europe and walking through the countries of France, Germany and Austria. He received a bronze star during his military service. After receiving his discharge in 1945, he attended Kansas State University.
He was united in marriage to Madelyn Keep on December 31, 1950 in Downs, KS.
Dean worked in Grand Island for the Bureau of Reclamation as a surveyor. He continued the same work in Kensington, KS. The couple moved to Colorado where Dean worked for the Forest Service and worked making logging roads near Steamboat Springs. They later moved to Virginia Beach, VA where he helped design interstate highways for the Blackburn Co. headquartered in Omaha. After a move to Houston, he began working for the Texas Department of Roads as a highway engineer.
Dean retired in October 1993 and the couple moved to Scotia where they have lived since.
Dean loved to read. He was a member of the Reuben Beck American Legion Post #150 of Scotia.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Karyn Heiser of Ashburn, VA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jerri and James Spellman of Aurora, CO and Lori and Ellis Keitt of Corpus Christi, TX; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Genevieve Tanis of Downs, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son and daughter; and a sister, Delpha Shike.
