Darrell G. Mead, 75, of Dannebrog died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Revel Matheke will officiate. Interment will be in Kelso Cemetery, southwest of Farwell with military honors at graveside. Visitation will be held on Monday, from 5 - 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Mr. Mead was born September 9, 1932 in Grand Island to Delbert and Edna (Wiese) Mead.
He was raised and attended schools in Wood River.
Darrell entered the U.S. Marine Corp where he served during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Marines, he returned to the Wood River area where he worked on several different farms. He then had a welding shop in Grand Island. He also worked at a gas station and drove a semi. For 12 years, he served as an EMT and fireman in Grand Island.
Later Darrell owned the Shamrock Motel in Grand Island. After selling the motel, he bought a ranch near Springview, NE where he lived until 1983 when he moved near Dannebrog. He then worked as an over the road driver for Overhead Doors.
Darrell was united in marriage to Nancy Hill on October 17, 2007.
Darrell enjoyed horses, fishing, and traveling. He especially liked to farm and work with farm animals.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Grand Island and the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Dannebrog; two daughters and a son-in-law, Vicki and Mike Wodrich of Doniphan and Darolyn Cool of Dannebrog; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Marlene Mead of Wood River; a son-in-law, Charles Cool of Dannebrog and special friends, Jerry & Jackie Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Delores; one infant son, Darrell; an infant daughter, Deanna and a grandson, Earl Peterson.
