Clifford A. Stefanowicz, 90, died Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton. The Reverends Martin Egging and Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be held in Our Lady of Mount Caramel Cemetery at Paplin with military rites at graveside by Ashton American Legion Post #108. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. with a rosary at 6:00 p.m., Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Clifford was born October 24, 1921 to Anton & Emma (Naprestek) Stefanowicz on a farm northwest of Farwell, Nebraska.

He attended District 24 School near Farwell and farmed with his parents.

He entered the United States Army on October 20, 1942 and was honorably discharged on February 3, 1946 at Fort Douglas, Utah and received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and the Meritorious Medal. He completed an eight week course in medical technician school at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, California. He served as a medical technician and was a member of a general hospital staff that cared for patients in malaria & surgical wards. He was in charge of the ward and acted as medical on commissioned officer in charge of 35 personnel.

Clifford was united in marriage to Barbara Platek on June 2, 1942 in St. Paul, Nebraska.

The couple lived on the farm near Ashton where he farmed and raised cattle.

In 2010, he moved to the Veterans Home in Grand Island.

Clifford loved driving truck, hauling fat cattle to the Omaha Stockyards or hauling grain to the local elevators. He enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, playing cards, casino gambling, fishing in Canada, watching the Cubs and Cardinals and getting to meet Harry Carey at a Cubs game at Wrigley Field.

He was a Howard County Commissioner for 24 years, a road grader for 8 years and a member of the Farwell School Board. He was also a member of the St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Farwell.

Clifford is survived by his four sons & daughter-in-law, Jerry Stefanowicz, Robert Stefanowicz and Daniel Stefanowicz, all of Ashton, and Steve & Barb Stefanowicz of Farwell; three daughters & sons-in-law, Elaine & Don Jehorek of Ashton, Marge & Wayne Hatcher of Columbus, and Mary & Scott Eickman of Garland, TX; seven grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Loueen Stefanowicz of Grand Island and Margaret Stefanowicz of Farwell.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Barbara on June 9, 2004, an infant daughter Catherine Stefanowicz and two brothers, Gilbert & Anton Jr. and a sister & brother-in-law, Blanche & Gordon Tully.
