Calvin L. "Spike" Smith

July 30, 1925 — November 26, 2011

Calvin L. "Spike" Smith, 86, of St. Paul died Saturday, November 26, 2011 at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. Pastor Rod Pedersen will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul with military honors at graveside by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.

Visitation will be held on Friday, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Calvin was born July 30, 1925 in Cushing to Clifford and Dora (Westcott) Smith. Calvin's mother died when he was three years old. He lived with an aunt and uncle until he attended school in Cushing.

At the age of 18, Spike entered the U.S. Army serving in Europe until receiving his discharge on May 15, 1947.

He was united in marriage to Betty Starkey on February 6, 1946 in Smith Center, KS.

Spike was employed by Howard County as a motor grader operator before starting Smith Construction Company in January 1954 as an owner-operator. Declining health forced him to retire.

Spike and Betty spent many winters enjoyed the warm weather of California in their motor home.

His wife Betty died on May 7, 2007.

In March 2008, he entered Matelyn Assisted Living Center.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping. He loved to dance, especially with his granddaughters.

Spike attended the Presbyterian Church in Cushing in his early years and was a member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul, St. Paul Masonic Lodge #82 AF & AM, the Land Improvement Contractors of America and the Mystic Shrine of Hastings since 1975.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Tina Smith of St. Paul and Tom and Sheri Smith of Central City; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Rod Pedersen of Crete; 8 grandchildren, Nicole Sayles, Melissa & Kristal Smith, Nathan, Jordan & Rachel Pedersen and Brandi and Kevin Smith; and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; four brothers, Gordon, Raymond, Kenneth and Eldon Smith and two sisters, Dorothy Keating and Helen Gilbert.
