Bonnie L. Steffen, 80, of Scotia died Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Scotia. The Reverend Mark Middendorf will officiate. Interment will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery in Scotia. Visitation will be held from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Scotia American Legion Auxilary or to the St. John's Lutheran Radio Ministry in Ord or to the Zion Lutheran Church in Scotia or to the Donor's Choice.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of the arrangements.
Bonnie was born February 12, 1930 to Lynn & Della (Gebauer) Vance in Scotia, Nebraska.
She attended District School #30 east of Scotia. She was a member of the class of 1947 Scotia High School.
She worked as a waitress at Clark Hotel and the Scotia Café©.
Bonnie was united in marriage to Loren Steffen on May 9, 1948 in Scotia. The couple lived in Scotia where Bonnie became very active in the community.
She worked at Anthony's Market from 1964-1970 and also was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school for 30 years, Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid and the Tuesday morning Bible Study. She also was a member of the Birthday girls club, the Lamartine pinochle club and the Rueben Beck American Legion Auxiliary Unit #150 of Scotia, serving as secretary for 35 years.
Bonnie enjoyed volunteering for the Red Cross at bloodmobiles, playing cards and reading. She had her "phone list" that contained friends names and numbers she used to call and talk to. She loved flowers and she enjoyed raising roses and African violets.
Bonnie is survived by her two daughters & son-in-law, Sharon & Mike Hiett of Scotia and Sue Scholz of Grand Island; three grandchildren, Kristen Hiett of Scotia and Kevin & wife Selena Hiett of Lincoln and Aaron and wife Stacy Scholz of St. Libory; three great-grandchildren; one sister & brother-in-law, Betty & Ron Luth of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Joyce Steffen of Hastings and a brother-in-law, Glen Hadenfeldt of Grand Island.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Loren on August 22, 2004 and one sister, Babs Hadenfeldt.
