Betty Jane Jensen, 85, of North Loup died Sunday, March 09, 2014 at her home near North Loup.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, at the United Methodist Church in North Loup. The Reverend Jerry Schwarz will officiate. Interment will be held in Hillside Cemetery in North Loup.
Visitation will be on Thursday, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to Valley County Hospice.
Betty was born January 11, 1929 on the family farm in Greeley County near Horace, Nebraska to Burt C. and Doris M. (Pogue) Johnson.
She received her elementary education in rural Greeley County Schools and attended Scotia High School and graduated from Greeley Public High School in 1946. She later received a teaching certificate from Kearney State College.
On June 3, 1946, she was united in marriage to Nels Jensen in Ord, Nebraska.
The couple farmed in various locations in Howard and Valley Counties until 1975 when they moved to a farm south of North Loup. They farmed and operated a dairy in partnership with a son until her husband's retirement in 2000. In addition to working with her husband on the farm, Betty also taught elementary schools in Greeley, Howard, Sherman and Valley Counties.
Betty was an avid reader as evidenced by the hundreds of books with her name inside the cover and possibly a notation regarding the plot or lack of. She enjoyed quilting, her house plants and took great pleasure from time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was the matriarch of the family and spent considerable effort caring for the needs of her extended family with no thought of the cost to herself.
She is survived by two sons & daughters-in-law, Lonnie & Salina and Terry & Kathy all of North Loup; one daughter and son-in-law, Lana & Larry Kolar of Elyria; five grandsons, Chris Kolar and wife Shannon of North Platte, Stacey Kolar and wife Melanie of Arcadia, Robbie Kolar and wife Monette of Scotia, Brian Kolar and wife Marie of Ord and Corbin Jensen of North Loup; one granddaughter, Angela Jensen of North Loup; four step-grandchldren, Wendy Barnett and husband Doug, Ward Nutt and wife Angie, Kari Rodehorst and husband Dana all of Kearney and Wade Nutt and wife Dionne of Elkhorn; eight great-grandchildren; ten step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Jensen of Staples, MN, Myrtle Skolil and husband Ron of North Loup; one brother Burt (Pete) Johnson of Ord; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2007; her parents, one brother William (Bill) Johnson; one sister, Patricia Jensen; five sisters-in-law, Anna Jensen, Erma Myers, Irene Schnase, Marie Johnson and Nita Johnson; five brothers-in-law, Jens Jensen, John Schnase, Kenneth Jensen and Edward Myers.
