Bessie Lanka, 94, of St. Paul died Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. Reverend Martha Voigt will officiate. There will not be a visitation, Mrs. Lanka was cremated. Inurnment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Bessie was born December 15, 1915 southwest of St. Paul to Frank & Jennie (Matousek) Jares. The family moved to the Cushing, Nebraska area and she attended school there. She graduated from Cushing High School in 1934.
She was united into marriage to William "Bill" Lanka on January 20, 1940. To this union one son Gary was born. The couple lived in St. Paul and Bessie worked at the bakery and Gamble store there.
The couple moved to Grand Island in the early 1950's and they bought the 5 Points Laundromat and operated it for ten years. The couple sold the business and retired.
William "Bill" passed away May 6, 2001. Bessie moved to Matelyn Retirement Community in St. Paul on July 7, 2007.
Bessie enjoyed gardening, cooking and dancing.
Survivors include her son, Gary Lanka of St. Paul, two grandsons, Kevin & his wife Jamie Lanka of Lincoln and Jason Lanka of Council Bluffs, IA; three great grandchildren, Carter, Marshall & Hadley Lanka.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill; a daughter-in-law, Nancy; a brother Louis Jares; and a sister Lucille Boll.
