Bernie M. Johnson, 91, of St. Paul died Thursday, August 21, 2014 at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Lincoln.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. Reverend Kati Collins will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.
Visitation will be on Sunday, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Johnson was born June 21, 1923 in Dannebrog to Hugh and Wanda Dever.
Bernie attended St. Paul schools where she graduated in 1941.
She then worked in the law office of Ralph Haggart and for the telephone companies in St. Paul and Grand Island.
She was united in marriage to Dale Johnson on September 4, 1945 in Dannebrog. The couple lived their entire lives in St. Paul.
She loved to follow her sons as they participated in sports.
Music was very important in Bernie's life. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church Choir and she also sung at weddings and funerals for many years. She sang for her first funeral while she was in the 9
th
grade. Bernie had also sung for many years at the Memorial Day services at Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.
She was honored with the title of St. Paul's first Distinguished Citizen in 1959. Bernie was a finalist for the Nebraska mother of the year in 1967.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Carl Mogensen American Legion Auxiliary Unit #119, Eastern Star and the PEO chapter, all of St. Paul. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bob and Diane Johnson of Olathe, KS and David Johnson of Lincoln; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Dale on April 15, 2005; a granddaughter, Kristin Johnson; one brother, Manley Dever and an infant sister, Phyllis Dever.
