Barbara J. Sachtjen, 64, of St. Paul died Monday, March 18, 2013 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island after a short battle of cancer, with her family by her side.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Kati Salmons will officiate. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer.
A time for family to greet friends will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Barbara was born May 14, 1948 to Floyd and Wilma (Smith) Crosby in Spalding, Nebraska.
She lived in Akron, Nebraska. As a young child she and her family moved to Spalding and then later moved to Cushing, Nebraska.
Barb attended school at District #44 in Cushing through the 8th grade. She graduated from Palmer High School in 1966.
She was united in marriage to George Sachtjen Jr. on October 14, 1967 in Grand Island, Nebraska.
After marriage the couple lived in Grand Island until 1976 when the couple moved to St. Paul.
She started her working career at the Cornhusker Ammunition Plant and later worked at Ore-Ida Foods in Grand Island.
Barb started working for the St. Paul Public School for 19 years until she retired in 2010.
While working at the school in St. Paul, she received Custodian of the Year from Nebraska School Association and Employee of the Year Award from the St. Paul Chamber of Commerce.
Barb enjoyed her children and grandchildren. She loved camping and fishing as well as traveling on vacations. Her most favorite vacation was for their 25th Anniversary when they rented a convertible and traveled through the Ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas then to Oklahoma and returning home.
She will always be remembered for her sweet honest smile.
Barb is survived by her husband, George of St. Paul; one son, Brad Sachtjen of Watertown, SD; two daughters & son-in-law, Julie Nowak & Jim Becker and Tina & Steve Ward all of St. Paul; four grandchildren, Brandon & Macey Nowak and Kylee & Riley Ward; six sisters & brothers-in-law, Marjorie Hall of Valencia, CA, Rosella & Alfred Glaser of Kearney, NE, Shirley & Milton Fields of Logan, IA, Bonnie Roth of Bentonville, AR, Veronica & Tom Peterson of Goddard, KS, and Carmen Crosby Fontenelle of Omaha, NE.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Holly Ward, infant twin brother and sister, Bobby & Betty and father-in-law and mother-in-law, George Sr. & Effie Sachtjen.
