Alvin J. “Fuzzy” Cernik, 84, of Palmer died Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in Palmer. Reverends Mike Anderson and Art Phillips will officiate. Inurnment will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 8, 2018 in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer.
A time to greet the family will be held on Friday, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family with a designation to be made at a later date.
Greenway Funeral Home in Palmer is assisting the family.
Alvin was born on December 19, 1933 in Sargent, NE to Barbara (Vodehnal) & Joe Cernik. He attended schools in Ord.
He served in the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War from April 1951 to May 1955.
Alvin was united in marriage to Carol Stevens on December 11, 1955 in Grand Island, NE.
He was employed by Firestone Retread Shop in Grand Island for 18 years. He also worked part time for Dick Rathje. They lived in the Phillips area for many years before moving to Palmer where he worked for Dinsdale Elevator & Cattle. He enjoyed delivering the Grand Island Independent in Palmer. Between Alvin & Carol, they delivered the paper for 40 years.
Alvin enjoyed woodworking and he had a great love for cooking for his family, especially on holidays.
He was a member of the Burton-Beyer American Legion Post 120 in Palmer. He was a past member of 40 & 8 Legion Club. Alvin was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Palmer.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Cernik of Palmer; children, Marilyn (D.D.) Dugger and Richard (Penny) Cernik, and Linda (Les) Doncheske, all of Palmer, and Kim (Rusty) Rowe of York; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Agnes Cernik of Ord; & an aunt, Bernice Vodehnal of Loup City.
Alvin was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Kapustka; father, Joe Cernik; stepfather, Bolish Kapustka; two sons, Kenneth & Keith Cernik; and a daughter, Sandra Cernik.
