Allen L. Verplank, 82, of Kearney died Friday, November 23, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Eldon Freeland will officiate. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the Palmer High School Athletic Department.
Mr. Verplank was born August 31, 1930 in Palmer to George W. and Ella M. (Freeland) Verplank.
Allen was raised and attended school in Palmer. He graduated from Palmer High School in 1948.
After his schooling he began doing local trucking with his dad. He then operated the Shady Rest Gas Station south of Palmer on Highway 92.
Allen was united in marriage to Vida Mae Stone on June 25, 1950 in Vermillion, South Dakota.
For the majority of his working life he was involved with the feed, grain and fertilizer business.
He drove truck for Grand Island Express from 1989 until his retirement in 1996. After Allen found that retirement wasn't for him, he started to deliver seed for Monsanto in Nebraska and surrounding states until he retired in 2002 due to health reasons.
His wife rode with him on trucking trips across the county.
During his school years, Allen was very active in athletics, playing and excelling in football, basketball and baseball.
The couple enjoyed traveling, going to Hawaii, Portugal, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Alaska. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 25, 2010.
Allen was a member of the First Church of Christ in Palmer and the Elk's Lodge of Kearney.
Survivors include his wife, Vida Mae of Kearney; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Terresa Verplank of Grand Island and Tom and Cathy Verplank of Lincoln; a daughter and son-in-law, Carey & Chuck Childs of Norman, OK; a son-in-law, Kevin Conway of Bellevue; 11 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Delores Stone of Minden; three sisters, Helen Kolar of Wolbach, Louise Davison of Palmer, and Barbara Meyer of Central City; and a sister-in-law, Marge Verplank of Sidney.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Theresa Conway; grandson, Brendan Conway; one sister, Lida Friedrichsen; one brother, Layton Verplank and father-in-law, Adrian Stone.
