Alfred Novotny, 84, of Elba died Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Central City Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Martha Voigt will officiate. Burial will be held in Elba Cemetery with military honors by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Elba United Methodist Church, Elba Fire Department, Elba Community Center or to the Elba Cemetery.
Mr. Novotny was born April 19, 1928 in Elba to Jerry and Agnes (Placek) Novotny.
Alfred was raised in Elba and attended Elba Public Schools where he graduated in 1946.
Alfred entered the U.S. Air Force on January 9, 1951. During his time in the Air Force, Alfred was a radio mechanic. He received his discharge on September 9, 1952.
He then began working for Floyd Tesmer at Tesmer Electric in St. Paul.
Alfred was united in marriage to Gloria Svoboda on June 4, 1955 in Elba. He then started and operated Novotny Electric. The couple lived and farmed an acreage where they had a small herd of cattle.
He enjoyed fishing, and being involved in all aspects of the fire department.
Alfred was active in the community, serving on the Elba School Board and the Elba Cemetery Board.
Alfred & Gloria were lifetime members of the Elba United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Trustees and on the administrative board of the church. He served on Elba Fire District and served as Secretary Treasure of the Elba Fire Department and EMT. He served as Fire Chief for 27 years and retired in 1990. He was a lifetime member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul. He was elected high office of Area B Vice-Commander, also served as Post Commander, Howard County Commander, District VI Adjutant, Vice Commander and Commander. He received District VI Citizenship Award in 1990.
Survivors include his wife Gloria of St. Paul; two sons and daughters-in-law, Wendell and Anna Novotny of Grand Island and Donald and Kathy Novotny of Fort Collins, CO; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and LaVern Obermeier of Lincoln; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Rose Lee Novotny of St. Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother and two brothers Gerald and Franklin Novotny.
